# Out to the Black
Out to the Black is space sci-fi campaign run in a homebrew fictional universe, run in the Cypher System.
## Campaign Synopsis
Humanity has spread to the stars. Humanity has lost record of what happened to Earth, but it is believed to have
suffered a total biosphere collapse, and in its waning days, spaceships were launched in all directions, humanity's
last chance to find survival among the black, abandoning their doomed world.
Many were invariably lost in the act of desperation, victim to the emptiness of space. The known survivors reached Xi
Tauri, and spread among its many planets. Waking from cyro-sleep, the original explorers staked out humanity's new
future among biomes hospitable and not, establishing agrarian villages, land stations, and basic terraformed lands.
As time has passed, humanity has salvaged its roots, good and ill. Travel between the stellar system and its planets is
long but commonplace. Civilization resides in hundreds of scattered settlements across the planets, moons, occasional
asteroid or comet, and space stations. The system's government focuses on a core set of planets, exploiting the
resources of the rest of the system for only its settlements. The outer worlds rely on local law, and some remnants of
the initial settlement of the system still drift in orbit, latent.
Likely to steal liberally from *Firefly*, *Star Trek*, *Farscape*, *Alien*, and *The Expanse*, mashing up elements of
hard sci-fi and space opera under an advanced technology rating (space travel inside a system is relatively ordinary,
but traveling beyond a system is almost never undertaken; FTL travel doesn't exist but gravity generation does;
*generally* things follow known physics, but there's always the opportunity for psionics, alien stuff, etc.).
## Characters
* Alex Frege, a mechanical explorer who loves the void
* Jared Paul Ware, a sharp-eyed explorer (technology flavor) who builds robots
* Taxion, a vicious warrior (skills and knowledge flavor) who fuses flesh and steel
## Sessions
The overall [session log](session-log) from bss's notes is meant to be a more detailed running history of in-game
occurrences.
### The Xi Tauri System
A separate page organizes the emerging detail of [the Xi Tauri system](xi-tauri).
## Character Creation
At their basic level, characters are defined as *NAME is a [adjective] [noun] who [verbs]*. Adjectives are
**descriptors**, nouns are **types**, similar to character classes, and verbs are **foci**.
Chapter 4 of the *Cypher System Rulebook* details character creation, with description of the mechanical elements, and a
small sidebar summarizing the steps to take to create a character.
### Sources
The majority of the options below are found, and best described, in the *Cypher System Rulebook*, with an open gaming
version available via the [Cypher SRD](https://screwtapello.gitlab.io/cypher-system-reference/). Most others come from
*The Stars Are Fire*. Anything homebrew we'll write up and link to here.
I skipped listing a lot of the core content, because there's no point in repeating that everything in the core book/SRD
are fair game --- and you can probably grok the appropriate foci or come up with a plausible explanation for anything
weird.
## Science Stuff
* [Xi Tauri](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xi_Tauri)
* The three blue-white B-type stars could form planets, though they don't have a ton of time in main sequence.
Likely require some form of shelter for life. Alien life, lots of meteor strikes and young planet activity.
* The F-type star yields the most earth-like planets.

# Out to the Black Session Log
## Session 04
Victor in the brig
off-world of Poseidon III
talking about the communication network and relays --- delays due to space, local broadcasts vs. system
Victor genetically engineered by Nexus Corp, kind of owned by the corp. doesn't have trackers that work in space, but he
has a local-range tracker that is in his shoulder. might be caught up by scanners on worlds or in Nexus Corp sites. Bloy
sets up an alarm if he sees traffic going out that (make him roll for it if it matters)
they have data from the HarvestGen site when they were doing their "radiation checks". some incriminating evidence,
might be a bit circumstancial, something showing the manipulation rather than the direct evidence of meddling
large population center on Tartarus II. takes a week to get there. while they're travelling, they start denying Victor
food and water. plan is to try to starve him and make him weaker, but they don't talk to him. trying to crack him.
Victor knows tha the site would have been blown.
Alex trying "to Stockholm Syndrome" Victor a bit while he's captive
HarvestGen playing up the explosion as an accident, all lost. Alex sees if there are others out there suspecting another
hacker group, which he finds (nat 20) --- Binary Phantom Syndicate (thanks ChatGPT) --- he will try to ingrain himself
with the group and possibly share intel over time
Tartarus II: terraformed moon of Tartarus, large population center. large metropolis, Cerulean Crater, is the population
center. ocean is liquid nitrogen of some sort, not widely used for anything. Jared has been here before. trained by a
secretive something. major output is agriculture.
Nexus Corp will eventually recgonize the signal that Victor has, but it should be after a little bit. the party has some
time
they want to expose the HarvestGen/Nexus Corp stuff, two options of either hacking into a relay directly, or working
with hackers. they are going the hacker route. Alex finds a group to work with local to Tartarus II. Jared is also aware
of a HarvestGen site on the area.
Alex is thinking of some sort of dead drop. the hacker group he contacts is named DataSquirt, they are interested in
getting their name out there as executing the network hack and exposing the information. Taxion tracks the DataSquirt
guy and know what they operate out of, just in case that's some kind of information useful later. Alex uses that
information as an asset of sorts for them to tighten up their security
Taxion wants to try to get some hallucinigens to mess with Victor.
security checkpoints stop Taxion and Alex momentarily, but Jared hacks into data sources and is able "to Oracle"
information to Taxion and Alex. ships are grounded, though, seems like they are looking for Victor, don't yet know that
they're looking for the Nyx. Alex has a convenient excuse about some sort of nanotech, and he gets intel about where
they could flip it and acquire it.
Nebula Bliss is the name of the drug, Victor takes it very poorly due to the bioengineering and robot parts. he starts
going into cardiac arrest, almost like it's a kill switch of sorts when he takes the drugs. Taxion heals Victor and
blames Nexus Corp for the bioengineering/implant in the first place
### Business for next time
* Word an Arc for dealing with the Nexus Corp

# The Xi Tauri System
The Xi Tauri star system consists of four stars in a hierarchy system.
* **Xi Tauri Aa** and **Ab:** two B-type stars in a binary pair. These stars, and their respective bodies, make up the
*core worlds*. The corporatocratic Ring is most prominent in these worlds, though their reach is incomplete.
* **Xi Tauri B:** A third B-type star which orbits the binary pair. The most massive of the stars in the system, it was
nevertheless at its distant aphelion when the arks reached the system, leading to its many worlds being less explored
and populated than the core worlds. The planets and et cetera of Xi Tauri B are sometimes known as the *wastes*,
despite being more uncharted than anything else.
* **Xi Tauri C:** A F-type star orbiting the other three stars, the worlds of the *rim worlds* are more likely to support
natural life with less terraforming effort, and are generally held to contain more exploitable resources than the core
worlds. the Ring is best positioned to forcefully export these resources, despite their minimal involvement in
governing this far out to the black.
## Habitation
Most worlds are, at a minimum level, partially terraformed. A handful of planets throughout the system are roughly
Terra-like, and have only been lightly influenced by humanity, though just as many are only inhabited in specific areas.
The majority have been majorly shaped by humanity to support life, and many still are controlled-environment enclosures
similar to space stations.
## Persons and Government
### The Ring
Forming from a variety of surviving corporations, the Ring is the dominant government and culture in the core worlds.
Their comprehensive control of resources, media, and infrastructure has guaranteed them financial and political
monopolies, despite the core worlds (and whole of Xi Tauri) nominally being a democratic republic. The core worlds move
to the tune of the Ring.
### Rimworlders
The common name for those who live on the outer reaches of the star system, rimworlders are a mix of outcasts, rebels,
subsistence farmers, traders, and the like --- generally, those outside of the cosmopolitan way of life of those living
under the Ring's dominance. Rimworlders with an independent streak tend to look upon those in the core worlds with a
slight amount of disdain, which is sometimes reciprocated. More animosity is reserved for the Ring itself.
### Government
The many planets of the Xi Tauri system make up the Federated Worlds of Xi Tauri. Membership is guaranteed and mandatory
for planets, including dwarf planets. Uninhabited worlds are represented by the Special Representative to the
Federation. Moons, planetary stations, and the like are usually aligned to their parent planet, though some have
successfully (or unsuccessfully) lobbied for direct representation in the federation. Minor planets may maintain their
own government, but generally are not considered for Federation membership.
Largely subject to the machinations of the Ring, the core worlds tend towards financial control and stability at the
expense of free expression, though some uniquely-administered worlds still exist within the corporatocracy. Other worlds
enjoy far more organizational freedom, stemming from far less attention from the Ring and the Federation itself.
## Known Worlds
* Xi Tauri Aa
* Xi Tauri Ab
* Xi Tauri B
* Xi Tauri C
* Asteria
* Helios
* Hera --- A Nexus Corp black site, according to Victor
* Icarus
* Icarus IV --- could be construed to "support" life, roughly.
* Perseus --- could support life but not aware of civilization
* Perseus I ("Medusa")
* Perseus II --- highly volcanic, thick atmosphere believed to be unhospitable to life.
* Poseidon --- planet consisting of liquid methane, practically the whole planet aside from mining rigs.
* Poseidon III --- partially terraformed moon, primary industry agriculture, primary export produce, meat, etc..
* Tartarus
* Tartarus II --- terraformed moon, metropolis-scale population center, one of the largest in Xi Tauri C; vast
liquid nitrogen ocean, so I guess it's very cold.
## Lost History
### The Arks
Were it not for cryosleep, humanity would have never survived the unknown thousands, if not tens of thousands, years
necessary to reach Xi Tauri.
### Marauders
It's not known from where those who were men came, but their appearance between worlds heralds nothing but ravage.
### Old Cultures of Earth
When Earth collapsed, its states scattered ships throughout the cosmos. Others may have survived long enough to find a
new home among the stars. The details of Earth's failure, or those who escaped it, have been largely lost.
### Intelligence Beyond
Worlds that support life had nevertheless produced only bacterial life before humanity arrived to the system. Genetic
mutation and biosequencing has introduced forms of life familiar to us on those worlds, though many believe (or fear)
that there is still unexpected intelligent life soon to be discovered. Or encountered.
